“Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn.” Elizabeth Lawrence

Fall is here. Leaves are twirling through the air. Pumpkins and mums are everywhere.

The days are getting shorter and soon we will be changing time. Falling back. Leaving us more dark than light. This is the part of fall I struggle with. More darkness. Makes a weary soul want to hibernate. Often I do.

I want to linger here. Hanging on till the last leaf dances away. Wrapping up in my blanket and sitting on the deck. Curled up with a good book. Soaking in the last of these longer days.

There are fewer and fewer birds at our feeders, as they began to move on.

Preparations are made before fall fades to winter.

Bulbs planted deep. Flower pots emptied and put away. Water hoses drained. Carried to the building.

The last bush-hog of the season. Limbs trimmed. Grape vines cut back.

Gutters cleaned out.

“Isn’t it piercing to realize that God not only knows where we live, but also knows the gutters into which we crawl.” Oswald Chambers

Gutters. Cleaned. Out.

Seems there’s personal preparation and inventory to be made as well.

We clean out the gutters on our homes but do we clean out our personal gutters?

Seal off  the places into which we crawl?

Impatience. Pride. Control. Disobedience. Greed. Vanity. Little “white” lies. Those things we have to justify.

“Disobedience or pride can derail usefulness.” Beth Moore ~Children of the Day

Things. Sin we let creep in, backs up in our “gutters” and stops them up.

Render us useless in Kingdom Work.

Stand in the way of openness to God.

And then…the gutters we crawl in.

As Dr. Seuss says, “Oh, the places you’ll go”.

With one foot in the world. One foot in the Word.

We trip up in all manner of places.

Addictions. Sin. Complacency. Self-condemnation.

Wallow in self-pity.

That’s where I easily  trip up~self-pity. Mind wandering a million places. Worries creeping in.

I hate the cold. I’m a warm, summer day kind of girl. Windows open. Breezes blowing in.

This fall I’m armed with several Bible studies, a Discipleship study, and a Connection group.

A commitment with my man to read the Word through.

Things that will keep me out of the darkness. Take me into The Light. Away from the gutter of self-pity.

Keep my “gutters” cleaned out.

Starting with life giving Words such as these:

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think on things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8 NLT

Dying to self. Moving out of the way. Allowing Him to move in.

“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” John 3:30 NLT
