Pulling the threads of God’s Character as I read through the Bible. I am paying attention and listening.

Dearest Reader,

I’ve been on a journey, traveling through the Word of God, searching and pulling the threads. I am beside myself with excitement, longing to share it with you

My journey began on January 14, 2019. It was a Monday. The details, vivid, yet ordinary, are still with me: same time same place. Flames dancing in the fireplace. The scent of coffee floating across the room.

Snuggled deep in the corner of the sofa, hands wrapped around my favorite mug. White lights twinkled, casting shadows across blank pages.

Pulling the threads of God’s Character as I read through the Bible. I am paying attention and listening.

Early in the morning, I turned the pages to Joshua, chapter three. I stood with the priests as they stood still in the Jordan. My heart pounded as Joshua said to the people:

“Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you” Joshua 3:10 (ESV)

This particular morning I needed to know, know, that the living God was among us. We had come through a hard season, a time of fear and worry. The truth is, just as the Israelites stood on the banks of the Jordan, our family was standing on the brink.

We were desperate for the other side. Desperate to see the living God among us.

We were stuck somewhere between the question and the answers. We’ve been here before. In this case, the stakes felt higher.

And so it began, me pulling the threads of God’s character.

My pen scratched across the page and I have not been the same. I found myself confronted by holy God, desperate and lacking.

One day led to the next, and I went back to the banks of my Jordan again and again, begging to see the living God.

And, there I found him.

I found him, not with the answers I was seeking, but as the Living God.

I found the character of a Living God breathing new life where there is no end in sight.

Joshua, Judges, Ruth. Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. I wept as the Israelites were taken into exile.

Beyond the tears, the threads in my journal, I saw one character after another revealed.

God is:

  • Alive
  • Holy
  • Steadfast
  • Judge
  • Faithful
  • True
  • Protector
  • Deliverer

Dearest One, I want to take you with me. Take you through Ezra and Nehemiah, and together we will pull these threads searching for God’s character.

Because this I know, when you begin to see the character of God, no matter the answer to your prayer, your difficult season that feels never-ending: You know beyond what you can see that He is still good.

We are searching for answers when all along before us stands the Living God. Faithful and True. Steadfast.

When we finally begin to see the character of God, we come face to face with a Living God.

When we pull the threads of God’s character, we truly begin to redefine the wilderness.

I am here to encourage you, equip you, and guide you as you redefine your wilderness. You can comment below or send a private email to tlmashburn@yahoo.com.

“There is no space to live well or love well, much less pursue the God who created us to be in fellowship with Him. We close the gap between what we need and what we want with more. Our spinning lives and broken hearts are empty while appearing full. We paste a smile on our face and tell anyone who asks we are okay while inside we are shattering a million different ways.” -Mornings In The Word
