“When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted in their grief. ‘Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation.”

Luke 22:45&46 (CSB)

Dearest Reader,

We are living in a country, a world, that is in a heap of ugliness. We cry out, do our best to make a difference in the cruelties happening around us. Trouble, we are mired knee-deep in.

Are we asleep on the job? Some days I feel as if I am, others, I am busy keeping myself above water, let alone do the one pro-active thing I can standing exactly where I am.

“Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all saints.” Ephesians 6: 18 (CSB)

I come up short in this area, easily distracted, most likely, you do as well.

“Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he told his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took, Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. He said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.'” Mark 14:32-34 (CSB)

I am a bit encouraged that Peter, James, and John are not so different than you and I.

Jesus steps deeper into the garden, falls to his knees and prays. Let’s see what happens:

“Then he came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, ‘Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.'” Mark 14:37-38 (CSB)

Jesus steps away from Peter, James, and John three times, each time he returned they were sleeping. I understand they have been through a lot, they know something big is about to happen, and they were tired.

Here is the thing, we serve a living, active God who never sleeps on the job. Never.

Why are we?

Is there something I need, you need, to change in our prayer lives. Prayer is less about us and more about God. Sacrificing time away from our phones, our laptops, Netflix, or anything that interferes with our prayer life. Here me now when I say there is nothing, nothing, wrong with any of those things as long as they are not being used for evil.

Prayer is a conversation with God. A relationship. It is the place where we get on His agenda, not where we get Him on ours. Prayer is our most active tool against the evil in the world and in our own hearts.

Prayer is holy communion with our Lord and Savior.

Are we sleeping on the job?
